Summary:
The article describes examples of pharmacological drug interactions with food at the stage of absorption, distribution and metabolism. There are the following mechanisms of interactions drug and foods: the formation of complexes of the food-drug, competition for transport systems, induction or inhibition of cytochrome P450 and others. We have considered examples of interactions of drugs with fruits, vegetables and other food products. Fruits, especially orange and grapefruit, can increase the level of certain drugs in the blood, such as statins, antibiotics, etc. Ginger and garlic affect the pharmacological activity of NSAIDs, anticancer and other drugs. Vitamin K, contained in many vegetables, affects warfarin, which can lead to life-threatening adverse reactions. Foods with high content caffeine increases the chance of adverse reactions bronchodilators and anti-arrhythmic agents. Products with a high content of tyramine effect on the action of MAO inhibitors. Depending on the interaction of drugs with food, drugs should be taken with a meal, after meal or empty stomach. This affects the efficiency and safety of pharmacotherapy. We have formulated general recommendations to patients, doctors and pharmacists about the rational combination of drugs and food products.
