BURNOUT PREVALENCE AND ITS ASSOCIATED FACTORS IN TRAINEE PHYSICIANS

Introduction. Burnout syndrome, manifested not only by emotional and physical exhaustion but also by a decrease in work efficiency, is a serious challenge for healthcare. Studies suggest that young age of healthcare workers is a factor associated with the development of burnout. This syndrome can develop during university education or residency training. Therefore, protecting the medical students and residences mental health should become a priority for the medical education system. Objective. To determine the burnout prevalence and associated factors among trainee physicians. Materials and Methods. We conducted the study in two stages: a pilot study (n=250) and a study on a sample population (n=315). The Maslach Burnout Inventory was used to assess the severity of emotional burnout. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used for the diagnosis of anxiety and depression. The questionnaires were carried out in online form. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26 and StatTech v. 3.1.1. Results. We obtained 315 completed questionnaires during the survey period, with a response rate of 12%. Burnout syndrome was diagnosed in 65.4% (95% CI 59.9-70.6) of respondents. Factors that increase the odds of burnout syndrome were determined to be poor health status aOR 2.263 (95% CI 1.11-4.60), lack of commitment to the profession aOR 6.649 (95% CI 2.97-14.87), and severity of depression aOR 1.20 (95% CI 1.06-1.35). Conclusion. Burnout syndrome among clinical center residents is a serious problem that affects more than half of physicians in training, which requires the development and implementation of measures to protect the mental health of clinical residents during residency period.
