Summary:
Abstract. The aim of the work was to determine the neurophysiological parameters in healthy individuals of different ages using conducting studies and diagnostic transcranial magnetic stimulation. Materials and methods. A total of 1575 people were examined, of which 1121 were evaluated for the functional state of motor nerves and skeletal muscles, 392 for sensory tracts, and 62 for the cortico-lingual pathway. To assess the state of peripheral motor nerves and skeletal muscles 1,121 people were included and divided into six age groups: 0–1 years old, 2–5 years old, 6–13 years old, 14–17 years old, 18–55 years old, and 56–96 years old. All underwent conduction studies, analyzing the latency and amplitude of the proximal (peripheral) CMAP response, sensory conduction velocity, and the amplitude of the sensory nerve action potential (SNAP). The cortico-lingual condition study included 62 healthy individuals aged 2 to 96 years. All subjects were divided into subgroups by age: children 2-17 years old (n=19), young and middle-aged people 18-55 years old (n=33) and elderly people 56-96 years old (n=10). All underwent diagnostic TMS - single-pulse protocol with the application of a surface discharge electrode with a constant interelectrode distance on the tongue along the central line and a standard ring coil on the head of the Fz on "10-20". Statistical analysis based on the computer program Statistica for Windows 7. Results. Significant differences in the latency and amplitude of the motor and sensory responses in patients of different ages were revealed, and a significant lengthening of latency indicators with age was shown. This process was universal, and was observed in the study of peripheral nerves of different lengths. Neurophysiological study of the biological processes of aging in the peripheral parts of the afferent system using conduction studies and diagnostic transcranial magnetic stimulation makes it possible to study the physiological reconstruction of sensory and motor pathways. Results of our work may be used in geriatrics for early detection of patterns characteristic of accelerated aging of the nervous system, as well as for further analysis of the mechanisms of this process and its possible prevention.
