Summary:
Introduction. In the context of the modern development of social and medical care for elderly and senile people, a pressing and widespread problem is the social phenomenon of ageism, or age discrimination. Unfortunately, ageism is often manifested by employees of health care and social service institutions in relation to people with reduced functional indicators. Purpose of the study. To study the subjective perception of age discrimination among elderly people with reduced biological parameters of functioning in the main domains of vitality. Materials and methods. We studied age discrimination among the elderly according to the E. Palmore scale and biological indicators of functioning in the main domains of vitality using questionnaires used in gerontology and geriatrics at the stage of patient admission to a geriatric institution. Results. The study revealed that older people with impaired functioning and vitality have a high level of perception of age discrimination, which can be considered a manifestation of ageism on the part of medical professionals. Biological indicators of functioning were assessed for the main domains of vitality. It was revealed that a significantly high level of discrimination is observed in elderly people with impairments in the motor domain, manifested by impaired motor activity, and in the sensory domain, namely in elderly people with hearing and vision impairment. This indicates the presence of manifestations of ageism on the part of specialists from healthcare and social service institutions providing social and medical assistance to elderly and senile people with these types of disorders. Conclusion. At the present stage, in order to improve the quality of gerontological care, it is necessary to increase the level of knowledge, gerontological awareness and competence of all specialists working with older people, both at the stage of preparing students in educational organizations and as part of improving postgraduate education, which will help reduce age discrimination in in general.
