Summary:
Introduction. Metabolic syndrome in middle-aged and elderly patients with hypertension makes its own adjustments to clinical and laboratory parameters. Adequate timely control of metabolic disorders allows for the best control of comorbid pathology. Purpose of the study. Study of the dynamics of clinical and laboratory parameters in middle-aged and elderly patients with hypertension against the background of metabolic syndrome with the additional prescription of Metformin to basic antihypertensive therapy. Materials and methods. The study involved 76 patients diagnosed with hypertension due to metabolic syndrome aged from 45 to 67 years (average age was 54.9±7.1). During the study, a comprehensive analysis of clinical and laboratory parameters was carried out before and after appropriate therapy by treatment group. Clinical parameters of patients were assessed using the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire, and laboratory parameters were assessed using blood chemistry tests. All research results obtained were statistically processed using appropriate computer programs. Results. The results obtained in middle-aged and elderly patients with hypertension and metabolic syndrome were assessed. As a result of the treatment, patients taking Metformin in addition to basic antihypertensive therapy showed positive dynamics in the level of quality of life and the studied biochemical blood parameters. Discussions. During the study, a significant decrease in glucose levels was obtained in all patients, as well as in the levels of C-reactive protein and uric acid in the study patients additionally taking Metformin. There was a significant improvement in quality of life indicators according to the SF-36 questionnaire in patients who took part in the study. Conclusion. The need for additional administration of Metformin to basic antihypertensive therapy has been proven for adequate correction of metabolic disorders in middle-aged and elderly patients with hypertension against the background of metabolic syndrome in order to achieve the best clinical and laboratory parameters and better control of cardiovascular diseases and their complications.
