Summary:
Introduction. Involutionary changes in the organ of vision affect the quantity and quality of incoming information from the outside. Visual impairment often occurs in older people. Causes of the development of sensory deficiency of the organ of vision, or visual deficit associated with aging, are considered to be presbyopia, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and retinopathy caused by common diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value of visual deficit (VD) for functioning and quality of life in people over the age of 60 years. Purpose: To examine the prognostic value of visual deficits (VD) on functioning and quality of life in people aged 60-89 years. Materials and methods. The study involved 478 patients aged 60-89 years with an established diagnosis of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) from 2019 to 2021. Visual acuity was measured at baseline using the Golovin-Sivtsev table from a distance of 5 meters. Depending on the maximally corrected visual acuity (MCVA), the patients were divided into three groups: no VD (MCVA ≥0.7), moderate (0.5 ≤ MCVA ≤0.6) or severe impairment of visual function (MCVA  ≤0,4). Quality of life, physical, cognitive, psychological and social functioning were assessed annually for 3 years. Results. At baseline, participants with VD had lower levels of physical, cognitive, psychological, and social functioning and quality of life. Compared with participants without visual impairment, participants with moderate and severe visual impairment experienced an accelerated deterioration in the main activities of daily living Cognitive and psychological functioning indicators were statistically significantly higher in the group without visual impairment, compared with groups with moderate and severe visual impairment (p = 0.021 and р  = 0.014, respectively). Discussion. In the older age group, VD anticipates an accelerated deterioration in physical functioning. Conclusion. A proactive approach to prevention, timely diagnosis and treatment of visual impairment can possibly contribute to improved functional independence, well-being and successful aging.
Keywords geriatrics, sensory deficit, visual deficit, older adults.
