Summary:
Introduction. In the current demographic conditions of population aging, it is urgent to improve the provision of assistance to the elderly population without age discrimination, which is designated as ageism. The problem of ageism in medical institutions is especially relevant. Factors of ageism among medical workers are gerontostereotypes, which are formed already in the student environment. These are judgments about an elderly person made on the basis of a stereotypical generalized perception.
Goal. To identify the prevalence of gerontostereotypes among 2nd year students of the Medical faculty of Yaroslavl State Medical University.
Materials and methods. By means of a survey on a specially designed questionnaire, a study was conducted to identify gerontostereotypes in 2nd-year students of the Faculty of Medicine.
Results. It was revealed that the predominant gerontostereotype influencing the formation of ageism among medical students is a negative stereotype regarding the health of the elderly. A significant part of students, future doctors, believe that elderly people are sickly, weak, and often suffer from brain disorders. There is also a stereotype in the representation of medical students regarding the ability of older people to study. Some medical students believe that older people are deprived of creative potential, poor workers and that older people lead an isolated life, are not interested in anything, are not independent, need constant help and care.
Discussions. The presence of gerontostereotypes is an important factor indicating the formation of ageist attitudes among medical students, which, of course, affects the moral and ethical characteristics of young doctors. This, in turn, can manifest itself in a violation of relationships in working with the elderly, affect the quality of medical care for elderly and senile people.
Conclusion. In order to prevent stereotypical thinking about age among future doctors, starting from the junior courses of the medical university, it is necessary to expand and deepen knowledge in the field of ethical and deontological education in working with the elderly. In the educational process of junior students, it is necessary to include sections that allow the formation of anti-ageist attitudes.
Keywords gerontostereotypes, medical university students, elderly people.
