Summary:
Actuality: The high prevalence of urinary incontinence syndrome in hospitalized elderly people reflects the urgent need for interventions to adapt the hospital structure and care processes aimed at helping to prevent the development of urinary incontinence syndrome, taking into account not only the physical structure, but also material and human resources. Given the aging of the population, hospital facilities will accept more and more elderly people who need special care, requiring professional actions that lead not only to prolongation, but mainly to an improvement in their quality of life.
Objective: To develop a specialized geriatric approach aimed at improving the quality of life of elderly patients with urinary incontinence.
Materials and methods: We have developed a specialized geriatric approach aimed at improving the quality of life of elderly patients with urinary incontinence. It included geriatric rehabilitation, which is described in the results of the study. The period of application of the specialized geriatric approach is 2 months. The results were evaluated after 2 months and a comparative assessment was carried out with the results of the control group, which had traditional management tactics.
Results: the use of a specialized geriatric approach for elderly patients with urinary incontinence leads to an improvement in urination rates in the form of a decrease in retention time and the number of urinations by an average of 42.6%. The use of a specialized geriatric approach for elderly patients with urinary incontinence leads to an improvement in urination rates in the form of a decrease in the time to reach the maximum urination rate by 67.1%, which is achieved by increasing the average and maximum urination rate by an average of 43.8%. The use of a specialized geriatric approach for elderly patients with urinary incontinence improves the quality of life by an average of 52.9%.
Conclusions: The specialized geriatric approach developed by us for elderly patients with urinary incontinence includes an initial assessment of the condition of a geriatric patient suffering from urinary incontinence, behavioral therapy (bladder training, pelvic muscle exercises, scheduled toilet visits, habit development, forced urination), pharmacological therapy (tamsulazine, estriol), training of patients and caregivers, the use of well-absorbent underwear with more specific treatment (cystone, peptides of the bladder IPH VGA).
