Summary:
Introduction. Social isolation is an objective condition defined by minimal contact with others and low levels of community involvement. Social isolation is commonly studied in common medical conditions, but is rarely studied among patients with age-related visual impairment and, in particular, with age-related macular degeneration. The aim of the study – studying the characteristics of social isolation syndrome among patients with age-related visual impairment. Material and methods. The study included 548 patients of various age groups with age-related macular degeneration with disease duration from 2 to 4 years. Diagnosis of age-related macular degeneration was carried out based on the results of a comprehensive ophthalmological examination. When identifying social isolation syndrome, a modified version of the social isolation index was used. The results of the study. The prevalence of social isolation among patients with age-related macular degeneration of different ages is directly dependent on the age of the patients and averages 12.34 cases per 100 examined. The prevalence in the age group of 18-39 years is 5.21 cases per 100 examined, in 40-49 years - 11.48 cases per 100 examined, in 50-59 years - 16.97 cases per 100 examined, in 60-69 years – 21.46 cases per 100 examined and in 70-79 years old 22.35 cases per 100 examined. Another feature of the prevalence of social isolation among patients with age-related macular degeneration is a direct dependence on the severity of the visual deficit. For mild visual impairments, the prevalence was 14.71±2.12 cases per 100 examined, for moderate - 18.06±1.74 cases per 100 examined, for severe - 25.89±1.87 cases per 100 examined, which indicates at a higher risk of social isolation in patients with age-related macular degeneration with severe visual impairment. Conclusion. Social isolation in age-related macular degeneration has a pronounced dependence on the age of the patients and the severity of the visual deficit, which indicates the relevance of this condition for gerontology and the need for its correction.
