Summary:
Introduction. Depression and sarcopenia are widespread in the elderly. However, the existence of a relationship between these nosologies is still questionable.
Aim: to study the relationship between depression and sarcopenia in elderly patients.
Materials and methods. The study included 204 elderly patients (average age 68.1±4.6 years). Complaints, medical history, life history, and anthropometric data (height, weight, body mass index (BMI)) were collected from all study participants. Depression screening was performed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS); upper limb muscle strength was measured using handgrip dynamometry, and lower limb strength was measured using a 5-times sit-to-stand test. Physical performance was assessed by walking speed, nutritional status was assessed by the nutrition assessment questionnaire (MNA), the presence of frailty syndrome was assessed using the «Age is not a Hindrance» Questionnaire.
Results. Patients with depression did not significantly differ from the group without depression in age (p = 0.055), the presence of frailty syndrome (p = 0.857), handgrip strength (p = 0.053). The 5-times sit-to-stand test in less than 15 seconds, satisfactory nutrition was observed in more patients without depression (97.4%, p=0.025; 89.6%, p
