Summary:
Introduction: Estimating the prevalence of geriatric syndromes provides an opportunity to optimize the geriatric care system. Our group of physicians decided to conduct a study to assess the prevalence of geriatric syndromes among visitors to active longevity centers. The ICOPE system, approved by WHO, was chosen as the screening tool.
The purpose of the study: to examine the prevalence of geriatric syndromes among visitors to Active Longevity Centers, using ICOPE instruments.
Materials and methods: ICOPE questionnaire was used for screening of geriatric syndromes. Further, the presence of geriatric syndromes was assessed using Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment including history taking questionnaire, Barthel index, Lawton scale, MNA, SARC-F, GDS, SPPB, Self-assessment of risk of falls scale, AD8, MMSE, Clock Drawing Test, ISI.
Results: A total of 91 subjects participated, mean age - 69.29, mostly female (85 out of 91). Screening results revealed: memory impairment - 52.75%, mobility impairment - 30%, nutritional impairment-36%, visual impairment-52%, hearing impairment-54%, emotional problems - 56%. 87% of the subjects are not dependent on assistance (Barthel index) and are independent at home (Lawton index), 12% have mild to moderate degree of dependence on assistance. Uncorrected vision problems are found in 40% of the elderly, uncorrected hearing problems in 64%, constipation in 8%, urinary incontinence in 25%, falls syndrome in 36%, history of fractures in 31%. 32 individuals (35%) were determined to be at high risk for falls. The FRAX scale identifies 16% at high risk for low-energy fractures. On the MNA questionnaire 12% scored low, half had a confirmed high risk of malnutrition. On the SPPB test 18 people scored low, corresponding to preasthenia in 10 people (11%), and to frailty syndrome in 8 people (9%). The SARC-F questionnaire identified probable sarcopenia in 5 individuals. Low grip strength was identified in 5 people. Probable depression on the GDS scale was identified in 18% of respondents, sleep problems in 39% (ISI scale). Moderate cognitive impairment was identified in 51 people (56%), mild cognitive impairment in 27 people (86% total).
Conclusion: Our team successfully tested the ICOPE tool at active longevity centers. This tool has shown good efficacy both when used alone as a screening tool and together with the CSA to identify geriatric syndromes.
