Summary:
Introduction. Visual impairment is independently associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline. These relationships are complex, and hypotheses have been put forward about various mechanisms of the influence of social isolation on changes in cognitive abilities. However, there has been practically no study of the relationship between the social isolation of patients with visual impairment and cognitive impairment. The aim of the study to study the relationship between social isolation and the psychological status of patients with visual impairment. Materials and methods. 282 elderly and senile patients with various visual impairments, 219 patients with cognitive impairment and visual impairment, and 183 patients without visual impairment were examined. The patients took questionnaires on the scales of depression, instrumental and daily activities in everyday life, pain and changes in health status. When identifying the social isolation syndrome, a modified version of the social isolation index was used, consisting of five points: the state of being married or living alone, interaction with their children, interaction with relatives, interaction with friends and participation in society. The results of the study. Elderly and senile patients with cognitive impairment and visual impairment had the highest level of problems with remembering actions (56,1%). Also, these patients experienced a deterioration in communication in the previous three months compared to the compared groups, which increases the risk of developing in elderly and senile patients with cognitive impairment and visual impairment of social isolation. Compared with the group of elderly and senile patients with visual impairment, the indicator was almost 2 times higher (4,5±0,2 points versus 2,4±0,2 points). Conclusion. Elderly and senile patients with cognitive and visual impairments are more likely to develop social isolation than similar patients with visual impairment and without psychological disorders and need preventive measures to reduce the burden of psychological disorders and social isolation in this population.
