Summary:
Introduction. Hand grip strength is also a useful predictor of nutritional status and an objective component of weakness syndrome in the elderly. Despite the functional connection between the sensory and motor areas, little is known about the relationship between visual impairment, sarcopenic obesity and hand grip strength, which is an important cause of decreased physical function. The aim of this study is to study the relationship between sarcopenic obesity, low hand grip strength and visual impairment. Material and methods. The study group included 3,075 elderly patients. The gripping force was measured using a digital dynamometer (T.K.K 5401, Tokyo, Japan). Visual acuity was measured at a distance of 4 m using an international standard visual diagram based on the Sivtsev table. Socio-demographic factors were used as covariates: age of patients, region of residence, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, physical activity level and the presence of a history of chronic diseases. Results. In patients with low hand grip strength, the highest proportion of visual acuity was impaired (59,2%, n=87), followed by patients with moderate visual acuity (48,8%, n=138) and patients with good visual acuity (29,0%, n=768). Patients suffering from sarcopenic obesity had a low hand grip strength of 34.7% compared to patients with normal or underweight – 28,2%. Compared with participants with good visual acuity, participants with moderate or impaired visual acuity had a higher risk of developing low hand grip strength after adjusting for covariates (OR=2,00, 95% CI=1,34–2,96, p
