Summary:
Introduction. Changes in the epidemiological situation have a significant impact on the healthcare system, including children's access to medical organizations. Studying changes in children's visits during different pandemic periods is crucial for understanding the influence of external factors on child health and adapting the healthcare system to new challenges.
Objective. To analyze the healthcare utilization of the pediatric population in medical organizations providing primary healthcare services in outpatient settings, and to identify changes in the indicators before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Materials and Methods. Data on the number of children's visits to Moscow medical organizations from 2018 to 2023 were analyzed, grouped by age, gender, year, and month of visit. Descriptive statistics and data visualization methods were used, employing Python libraries such as Matplotlib and Seaborn. A comparative analysis of the pre-pandemic (2018–2019), pandemic (2020–2021), and post-pandemic (2022–2023) periods was conducted.
Results. In 2020, a significant decrease in children's visits was observed, especially among those under 5 years old, due to the introduction of restrictive measures and parental concerns about visiting medical facilities during the pandemic. In 2021, a compensatory increase in visits was recorded, reflecting an accumulated need for medical care and restoration of trust in the healthcare system. The structure of visits changed: there was an increase in visits related to mental disorders, possibly connected to the pandemic's psycho-emotional effects on children and adolescents. Age and gender analysis showed stable trends with increased visits among girls over 12 years old, highlighting the need to address the specific needs of this group.
Conclusions. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected children's visits to medical institutions, altering both quantitative indicators and the structure of visits. To enhance the healthcare system's resilience, it is necessary to strengthen preventive programs, focus on children's mental health, and conduct further research to assess the long-term effects of the pandemic on child health. Implementing these recommendations will help adapt the healthcare system to future epidemiological challenges and ensure the preservation and improvement of the younger generation's health.
