Summary:
The integration of telemedicine technologies into dental practice is increasing; therefore, this study aimed to assess dentists’ attitudes toward the use of telemedicine consultations for the interpretation of radiological images of the dentofacial system. Materials and methods. Questionnaires from 402 dentists were analyzed. The mean professional experience was 13.9±8.3 years; 38.8% had experience using telemedicine consultations. The questionnaire included items on socio-demographic characteristics; on the use of telemedicine in dentistry with Likert scale responses, where the maximum score indicated a positive attitude; and an open-ended question on improving telemedicine implementation in dental care. Statistical analysis (IBM SPSS 26.0) comprised frequency analysis by socio-demographic variables, calculation and comparison of means, and correlation analysis between years of experience and mean survey scores. Results and discussion. Most dentists believe telemedicine will improve the quality of image interpretation (3.98±0.80), interaction between radiologists and dentists (3.82±1.00), and collaboration among specialists involved in dental care (4.04±0.85); reduce diagnostic time, including in complex cases (3.98±0.87); and ensure the security of patients’ personal information (3.75±0.99). According to respondents, telemedicine effectiveness would be enhanced by additional training of radiologic technologists in dental organizations (75.6%); methodological guidelines for radiology departments (71.1%); additional equipment for processing, storage, and transmission of radiological images (28.3%); further training of dentists (15.4%); and advanced training of radiologists in telemedicine centers in interpreting dentofacial images (8.2%). Dentists’ attitudes toward telemedicine were not associated with years of experience but were influenced by prior use of telemedicine in practice. Those with diagnostic telemedicine experience demonstrated a more positive attitude toward radiologists’ telemedicine consultations in dentistry. Conclusions. Dentists’ positive expectations regarding telemedicine are associated with improved diagnostics and interdisciplinary interaction. Most respondents emphasized the need to enhance the competence of radiologic technologists in dental organizations.
