Summary:
Introduction. Sarcopenia is a key modifiable risk factor for falls in geriatric patients. Its diagnosis in primary care settings is challenging due to limited time and resources. The European Working Group on Sarcopenia (EWGSOP2) has proposed the concept of "probable sarcopenia" for the early identification of individuals at risk. The aim of the study was to identify predictors of probable sarcopenia in elderly and old adults with a history of falls. Materials and methods: the study included 211 individuals over 65 years of age (mean age 75.1 ± 7.2 years) with a history of falls. All respondents were assessed for their complaints and medical history, upper limb strength using a hand dynamometer, lower limb strength using the five-step chair stand test, fear of falling, and depression (using the Geriatric Depression Scale, GDS-15). Results: probable sarcopenia was identified in 27,5% of participants. Probable sarcopenia was observed 2,2 times more frequently in individuals aged 75 years and older compared with participants aged 65–74 years (χ² = 9,9, p = 0,001), among those living alone (χ² = 4,3, p = 0,037), among unemployed participants (χ² = 6,7, p = 0,009), and among respondents with depressive symptoms (χ² = 8,4, p = 0,004). Conclusions. In elderly and old people with a history of falls, significant predictors of probable sarcopenia are: age ≥75 years (р = 0,014), living alone (р = 0,038), being unemployed (р = 0,037), and the presence of depressive symptoms (р = 0,023). The data obtained indicate the need for timely diagnosis and correction of clinical, social, and psychoemotional predictors of sarcopenia.
