Summary:
Introduction. Chronic venous and lymphovenous insufficiency is an important socio-economic problem. It is one of the most common pathologies of the vascular system [1,2]. Disorders of venous outflow of the lower extremities are observed in 60–75% of the adult population of developed countries [3]. With inadequate treatment of diseases leading to CVI, severe trophic complications and complications that can be fatal for the patient, in particular thromboembolic ones, develop [4]. In particular, trophic ulcers significantly impair the quality of life, lead to loss of ability to work, and, in some cases, to disability of patients. Trophic ulcers most often develop in the elderly. The annual increase in the population over 50 years is 3.5 cases per 1,000 population; after 65 years, the incidence increases 3-4 times, reaching approximately 6% [6-11]. In this age group of patients, concomitant somatic pathology is quite common, which complicates the course of CRVN and trophic ulcers, leading to rapid progression and complicating their treatment. Furthermore, it has been established that the risk of death in elderly patients with chronic venous insufficiency is increased, regardless of gender, due to their comorbidities [5].
Objective: to compare and evaluate the effectiveness of manual lymphatic drainage massage and hardware lymphatic drainage massage using banding in the treatment of chronic lymphovenous insufficiency in elderly patients.
Materials and methods: medical records of patients treated in the department of lymphology and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) of the Phlebology Center in Kaliningrad, Russian Federation, for the period 2020-2021 were analyzed.
To automate statistical processing, the statistical package SPSS 20.0 for Windows was used.
Results: patients were divided into 2 groups according to the type of massage used. After the treatment, a significant decrease in the volume of limb edema was observed in patients of both groups, but a predominance of hardware lymphatic drainage massage was revealed. All patients noted an improvement in their condition, a decrease in swelling, and the disappearance of pain. According to subjective data, after performing manual lymphatic drainage massage, patients noted a decrease in body weight and a feeling of lightness «in the whole body», compared to hardware massage.
Conclusion: in the treatment of lymphovenous insufficiency, both hardware and manual lymphatic drainage massages can be used.
