Summary:
Introduction. Anthocyanins are water-soluble plant polyphenolic pigments of interest for the development of topical semisolid forms with antioxidant-oriented functionality. Their technological use requires selective isolation from plant raw material, uniform incorporation into the base, emulsion stability and pH control, because anthocyanin stability is strongly affected by acidity. Fireweed flowers (Chamaenerion angustifolium) may be considered an available source of anthocyanin-containing fractions, but technological approaches to incorporating such fractions into semisolid preparations require experimental justification.
Objective. To isolate and purify an anthocyanin-containing fraction from fireweed flowers and to perform a comparative technological evaluation of model soft cosmetic forms for external use.
Materials and methods. Dried fireweed flowers were extracted with 0.1 M hydrochloric acid at 60 °C for 1 hour at a raw material-to-extractant ratio of 1:20. After filtration, the fraction was purified by solid-phase extraction on hypercrosslinked polystyrene, washed with 0.1 M HCl and eluted with 96% ethanol. The eluate was concentrated and lyophilized. Anthocyanins were assessed visually and by differential spectrophotometry and thin-layer chromatography. The resulting fraction was incorporated into hydrophilic, hydrophobic and emulsion bases. The samples were assessed for organoleptic characteristics, colloidal and thermal stability, and pH.
Results and discussion. The extracts contained compounds whose spectral and chromatographic characteristics corresponded to cyanidin-3-rutinoside; a characteristic color change was observed with increasing pH. All prepared samples were homogeneous violet or light-violet masses. pH values ranged from 5.90 to 6.75. Emulsion samples No. 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10 maintained colloidal stability after centrifugation; sample No. 9 showed phase separation. Thermal stability of the emulsion samples was maintained after incubation at 40-42 °C for 24 hours. Samples No. 8 and No. 10 were the most promising according to the combined sensory and physicochemical indicators; among hydrophilic bases, sample No. 2 showed the most pronounced gel structure.
Conclusion. Sorption purification on hypercrosslinked polystyrene is applicable for obtaining an anthocyanin-containing fraction from fireweed flowers. Further development requires quantitative anthocyanin standardization, clarification of base, rheological profiling, microbiological quality assessment, release testing and long-term stability studies.
