Summary:
The relevance of uveitis is due to its chronic, relapsing course, high patient disability, and even blindness, all at a relatively young age. However, the epidemiology of uveitis in Russia as a whole remains unknown, as official statistics only cover a subset of its locations.
The aim of the study is to investigate the prevalence and total number of patients with uveitis (iridocyclitis and chorioretinitis) in the Russian Federation.
Methods. Study of prevalence of uveitis. Since adequate data on the prevalence of iridocyclitis were obtained from a subset (n=51) of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, a modeling of the overall epidemiological picture for the Russian Federation was conducted, taking into account the prevalence rates in the constituent entities that provided the data.
Results. As of 2025, the prevalence of iridocyclitis in 51 regions as a whole was 35.0 per 100,000 population, including 6.7 among children aged 0-14; 15-17 years - 15.1; and 42.0 among adults. A statistically significant increase in the prevalence of iridocyclitis is noted in the period from 2023 (31.4 per 100,000 population) to 2025, due to an increase in the prevalence of iridocyclitis in adults. Overall, for 2023-2025, the structure included 61.2% acute and subacute, 25.1% chronic iridocyclitis, 12.1% other and unspecified iridocyclitis, and 1.6% lens-induced iridocyclitis. The prevalence of chorioretinitis in 2025 was 7.4 per 100,000 population, including children 0-14 years old - 5.2, children 15-17 years old - 8.9, adults - 7.7. In the structure of chorioretinitis as a whole for 2023-2025, focal forms of chorioretinitis account for 48.7%, disseminated - 4.6%. Intermediate uveitis, other and unspecified forms of chorioretinitis accounted for 46.7%. The total prevalence of uveitis was 40.4 (59,126 people) in 2023; 41.5 (60,625); 2025 - 44.2 (64,527) per 100,000 population.
Conclusion. The data from this study suggest that the problem of uveitis remains highly relevant overall, with a likely increase in the prevalence of iridocyclitis. Therefore, research aimed at determining optimal therapy for patients suffering from uveitis remains relevant.
Keywords uveitis, iridocyclitis, chorioretinitis, epidemiology.
