Summary:
Introduction. Due to the continuous aging of the population and the increasing number of elderly people, osteoporosis (OP) has become a socially significant disease leading to disability and increased mortality. It has been established that various geriatric syndromes identified in elderly patients are interrelated. However, the influence of osteoporosis on the course of somatic and functional status in elderly patients has not been identified.
Objective. To assess the impact of osteoporosis on somatic and functional status in elderly patients.
Materials and Methods. A total of 137 elderly patients were studied. The average age was 82.5±6 years. Patients were divided into the presence or absence of osteoporosis: the first group consisted of 41 patients without osteoporosis, and the second group consisted of 96 patients with osteoporosis. The somatic status was assessed, including laboratory data (clinical and biochemical blood tests, immune inflammation index (III) calculated as platelets × neutrophils/lymphocytes, platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and the Charlson Comorbidity Index. Pain was assessed using the VAS scale, and muscle strength was assessed using hand dynamometry. Functional status included assessment of motor activity using the Tinetti test, instrumental functional activity in daily living (IADL) using the Lawton scale, and assessment of basic activity using the Barthel scale (ADL).
Results. In patients with osteoporosis, the incidence of metabolic syndrome increased by 28.6% (p=0.003), chronic kidney disease by 30.2% (p=0.001), and type 2 diabetes mellitus by 156.4%. (pase in stability, independent living skills, and instrumental functional activity in daily life.
Keywords senile Osteoporosis, comorbidities, inflammation, functional status
