Cough occurs with various diseases of the respiratory tract. It is one of the auxiliary mechanisms for cleansing the respiratory tract from sputum and foreign particles. 53 antitussive medicines of synthetic origin are considered in the article, which are used for pharmacotherapy of "dry" and "wet" cough. Based on the analysis of instructions for medical use and scientific literature, information on 53 medicines is systematized according to the following criteria: classification (depending on the mechanism of action and the active substance); indications and contraindications; features of use; drug interactions; data on the possibility of using medicines during pregnancy and lactation; effectiveness of medicines according to independent clinical studies. The analysis of the assortment of medicines (synthetic origin) on the pharmaceutical market of the Republic of Belarus showed the following: 7 (50,9%) of medicines are presented in liquid dosage form, 26 (49,1%) of medicines are in solid dosage form. In the Republic of Belarus, 23 medicines are produced (43,4%), the leading company producing native antitussive medicines is LLC «Pharmtechnology». The price availability is assessed in the work and calculates the cost of a seven-day course of therapy for adults. The analysis showed that the cost of therapy varies widely: for liquid dosage forms - from 3,04 to 74,92 rubles, for solid dosage forms - from 0,35 to 23,49 rubles. The least cost of the course of therapy (up to 7 rubles) is 51,5% of medicines (in solid dosage form). Only 13,3% of medicines (in liquid dosage form) and 55,6% of medicines (in solid dosage form) in the 1st package (vial) will provide the patient with the course dose for 7 days. When a pharmaceutical worker provides pharmaceutical assistance to a customer, he must take into account a significant number of factors (the cause and type of cough, its duration, the preferred dosage form, the rules for the use of medicines, drug interactions, concomitant diseases, etc.), be guided by the patient's preferences, respect the principles of pharmaceutical ethics and deontology.
