Summary:
Actuality. During last decades, we can see an increase number of elderly patients with chronic systolic heart failure. Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome that usually means poor prognosis both for live and its quality. It is known that there are many pathophysiologic pathways between both conditions.
The aim of our paper is to study sarcopenia and its components in patients 65+ years old with chronic systolic heart failure.
Methods: Patients with chronic HF 65 and over years old with depressed ejection fraction (EF less than 50%) were included in the main group (n = 240). Control group (n = 200) was composed by patient with cardiac diseases but with no evidences of congestive HF, without EF decline and with no significant valve dysfunctions according to echocardiography. Additional control group was composed by chronic heart failure no more than 55 years old.
For detecting and evaluation of sarcopenia we used grip strength, 5m gate speed test, mid-arm muscle circumference.
Results: Prevalence of sarcopenia was identified 15.00% in the main group, 2.00% in the control group (p
