Summary:
Glaucoma is considered an urgent problem in gerontology due to its high prevalence among the elderly. The development of glaucoma depends on many factors, including cardiovascular ones, which are insufficiently studied. The aim of the study - study the prevalence and prognosticality of cardiovascular risk factors in the development of primary open-angle glaucoma in the elderly. Material and methods: The study performed at the Tambov branch of the ISTC "eye microsurgery named after academician S. N. Fedorov" in 2017-2019 included 280 elderly patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. The comparison group consisted of 250 patients with a similar pathology of middle age, and the control group consisted of 260 patients 60-74 years old without glaucoma. We studied prevalence and predictive value of cardiovascular risk factors according to standard techniques. Results of the study: A high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors was found in elderly patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, exceeding the indicators in the middle-aged group and in the control group. Among cardiovascular risk factors, ischemic heart disease (-3.5), myocardial infarction (-4.0), and chronic heart failure (-4.5) are the most predictive. The sum of prognostic factors related to cardiovascular disease exceeds a predictive value of abnormalities of systemic hemodynamics. Conclusion: Predictive cardiovascular risk factors are recommended for screening for glaucoma in the elderly population.
Keywords glaucoma, cardiovascular risk factors, advanced age, and predictability
