Actuality. COPD is a common disease in the elderly, and its prevalence continues to grow in older age groups. Elderly patients with COPD become gradually disabled and physically disabled mainly due to shortness of breath and fatigue, which are the main disabling symptoms that lead to reduced physical performance and difficulties in performing daily activities. The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence of asthenia, as well as to study the relationship between asthenia and disability in elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Materials and methods. This study was conducted on 97 patients. Three tools were used: the personal information form (PIF), the visual analog scale of asthenia (VAS-F), and the short disability questionnaire (BDQ). Statistical analysis was used to evaluate the data obtained: the Student's t-test, the Kruskall-Wallis test, and the calculation of the Pearson correlation coefficient. Results. It was found that as asthenia increases in patients with COPD, so does disability, that there are relationships between asthenia and marital status, and that there are relationships between disability and gender. In addition, this study found significant differences in the VAS-F and BDQ scores of COPD patients for certain symptoms, such as shortness of breath, asthenia, coughing, and the presence of sputum.
