Introduction. On April 17, 2021, a new nomenclature of scientific specialties, in which scientific degrees are awarded, began to function within the framework of the state system of scientific attestation. In turn, within the group of scientific specialties "Biomedical Sciences" in the new nomenclature there were minor changes. Work purpose. Discussion of the nomenclature of scientific specialties in the part of the group of scientific specialties "Biomedical Sciences" on the issue of awarded degrees in various branches of science with the prospect of developing approaches to the design of passports of scientific specialties. Materials and methods. The analysis is made of: the nomenclature of scientific specialties for which scientific degrees are awarded, in the part of the group of specialties "Biomedical Sciences"; valid passports and new draft passports of scientific specialties of the group of specialties "Biomedical Sciences"; information on functioning dissertation councils and defended dissertations. Results. There is some uncertainty (inconsistency) in the organization of the list of branches of science for which academic degrees are awarded. Examples are given from the projects of passports of scientific specialties, containing approaches to the differentiation of branches of science by areas of research. Problematic issues are raised that can be considered in the future by the relevant expert council in the framework of improving the nomenclature of scientific specialties in biomedical sciences. Conclusion. The issue of differentiating the areas of research, given in the draft passports of scientific specialties, according to the branches of science in which academic degrees are awarded, requires further professional discussion. The functioning of the state system of scientific certification, including dissertation councils and peer-reviewed scientific publications, will depend on the quality of the developed passports of scientific specialties in biomedical sciences.
