Introduction. In forming the experience of training and professional development of health care organizers, the activities of the Department of Social Hygiene and Health Organization of the Central Institute for Advanced Training of Doctors (now the Department of Health Organization and Public Health of the Russian Medical Academy of Continuing Professional Education), the history of its organization and further activities aimed at improving the system of training specialists in the field of health organization and public health deserve special attention. The purpose of the study: to identify the main features of the activities of the Department of Social Hygiene and Health Organization of the Central Institute of Advanced Medical Training during its formation and development. Material and methods. content analysis, chronological, comparative - historical research methods. Results. The activity of the department is closely connected with the peculiarities of the health care system in different historical periods of time, which required the search for the most optimal ways of training and using health care organizers aimed at improving the quality of medical care and the effectiveness of the activities of medical and preventive institutions. The features inherent in the process of formation and the main activities of the department, the forms of its work are determined. The teaching staff of the department demonstrated invaluable experience in training healthcare personnel in difficult historical conditions. From year to year, new areas of activity were developed at the department, the training contingent expanded, educational and methodological support, forms and methods of training were improved. For permanent assistance to practical healthcare, correspondence, field, and intermittent forms of education have been introduced. The most effective forms and methods of preparation and use of health care organizers were discussed at the conferences. The Department has accumulated experience in conducting WHO international courses for health administrators. The research topic was aimed at solving urgent health problems related to the application of scientific approaches to the comprehensive study of public health, problems and the main directions of the development of the health system. Conclusion. The history of the formation and development of the department is an absolute reflection of the events of the era of the creation and further development of the department. The most valuable and significant is the teaching staff of the department, which has brilliant professional skills, high scientific and creative potential, experience, enthusiasm and responsibility in solving professional tasks for the training of health care organizers due to the requirements of the time.
