Summary:
Patients with primary angle-closure glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy of the elderly occupy a significant share in the structure of those who have applied for specialized ophthalmological care, but are rarely examined by geriatricians, despite the presence of deficient conditions. The postural balance remains practically unexplored in this contingent.
The aim of the study was to analyze the components of postural balance in elderly patients with combined primary angle-closure glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
Material and methods: The postural balance was studied in 88 elderly patients with primary angle-closure glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy who received specialized treatment at the Tambov branch of the Academician S. N. Fedorov Eye Microsurgery ISTC. The control consisted of 62 patients of the same age without the above-mentioned ophthalmopathology. The postural balance in both groups was evaluated by the stabilometric method on the computer complex "Balance Manager". To assess the postural balance, the following tests were used: simple walking, tandem walking, walking with a transition.
Research result: A statistically significant decrease in the step length to 52.64±1.1 cm in the main group against 61.28±1.2 cm in the control group, the movement speed to 78.12±1.5 cm/s against 91.25±1.4 cm/s in the control group according to the "Simple Walking" test, the step width to 9.18±0.5 cm against 6.42±0.4 cm in the control group, the movement speed to 28.06±0.8 cm/s against 33.47±0.7 cm/s. This objectively indicates the postural instability of patients aged 60-74 years with primary angle-closure glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy during movement.
Conclusion: Postural instability of patients aged 60-74 years with the considered ophthalmological pathology requires attention to correction by geriatricians.
