Introduction. One of the actual geriatric syndromes that significantly reduce the functional and social activity of the population of older age groups, as well as their quality of life due to injuries or fractures of various localization, traumatic brain injury, is considered to be the syndrome of falls, which has an actual, social and medical significance at the present time. Purpose of the study: To study the severity and causes of falls syndrome among elderly patients with glaucoma. Materials and methods. Among 282 elderly patients undergoing inpatient treatment for glaucoma at the S.N. Fedorov National medical research center «MNTK Eye Microsurgery», Tambov (main group) and 121 patients without glaucoma (control group), the severity and causes of the syndrome were studied according to medical documentation and anamnesis. Results. It was found that among the patients of the main group, falls with injury were statistically significantly more often recorded – 46,5±3,0% versus 24,0±3,9% in the control group and, accordingly, the syndrome of falls without injury was less frequent. In addition to the high frequency of falls with various injuries, patients with glaucoma have a higher proportion of falls with significant damage. The main group is dominated by internal falls – 68,1±2,8%, while in the control group – external falls of 73,5±4,0%. Conclusion. The study of the severity and causes of the syndrome of falls in elderly patients with glaucoma allows us to determine ways to prevent this geriatric syndrome.
