Summary:
Introduction. Age-based discrimination (ageism) still remains by far the most urgent problem in the early 21st century. Ageism has important multidimensional effects on the quality of human life and the economy. Ageism in medicine as well as lack of effective role models of both healthcare workers and elderly patients (particularly in the post-reproductive lifespan) significantly reduce the ‘prime of your life’. Objective. To develop a ‘Freedom From Age ‘KPAINS’ questionnaire aimed at revealing ageism patterns across the life span in order to promote healthy aging from gerontology domain principle perspective and taking into consideration potential ageism and age discrimination manifestations (e.g. institutional, interpersonal, self-directed). Materials and Methods. Designed by a team of researchers, the questionnaire aims to reveal ageism patterns across the life span in order to promote healthy aging. One of the key stages in the questionnaire construction was gerontology domain principle which made it possible to take a more holistic and individualized approach to the patient across his life span in the context of Pro Age technologies and anti-aging management. Results and Discussion. We conducted a questionnaire survey of 28 patients. The survey included subjects who were over 18 years, who achieved different levels of educational attainment and had different levels of income. Subjects who were under 18 years, who had neuropsychiatric disorders, exacerbations or decompensations of chronic conditions as well as subjects with a reported history of cancer or diagnosed with cancer during the follow-up and those with acute illnesses or injuries were excluded from the survey. Designing a questionnaire based on the domain principle enables us to take an integrative approach to managing patients, regardless of their age, sex or presenting complaint as well as to improve patient follow-up for an effective long-term ‘doctor-patient’ relationship. This will make it possible to better evaluate the effectiveness of ‘doctor-patient’ relationship. Conclusion. We have revealed significant ageism patterns using the ‘Freedom from Age ‘KPAINS’ questionnaire. The ‘Freedom from Age ‘KPAINS’ questionnaire aimed at addressing healthy ageing through revealing patterns of ageism across the life span helps to identify ‘blind spots’ in the ‘doctor-patient’ relationship, thus minimizing unintentional bias either on the part of doctors or patients. This allows timely and effective integration of Pro Age technologies into patients’ lives.
Keywords ageism, healthy ageing, an ageism questionnaire, patterns of ageism, a 5-P medicine approach, integrative medicine, a domain principle
