Summary:
Introduction. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains one of the leading causes of visual impairment and its prevalence is steadily increasing as the incidence of people with diabetes mellitus (DM) increases. However, the study of statistical data on diabetic retinopathy among ophthalmological complications of diabetes mellitus was practically not carried out.
Purpose of the study: Analysis of statistical data on diabetic retinopathy among ophthalmological complications of diabetes mellitus and other ophthalmopathology.
Materials and methods. The study was conducted by a retrospective method for 2016-2021 in the S.N. Fedorov National medical research center «MNTK Eye Microsurgery», Tambov, which included over 70,000 cases of elderly and senile patients seeking specialized ophthalmological care. Ophthalmological complications of type 2 diabetes were also considered: diabetic retinopathy, diabetic cataract, diabetic macroangiopathy, diabetic macular edema. For comparison, non-ophthalmic complications of type 2 diabetes have been studied.
Results. Determination of the structure of ophthalmological and other complications of type 2 diabetes in the base area over a long period showed the predominance of diabetic neuropathy and diabetic nephropathy among ophthalmological complications of DR, and among neophthalmological complications of type 2 diabetes. Over a six-year period, the leading ophthalmological complication of type 2 diabetes in the Tambov region is DR, which on average for 2016-2021 is 13.3%, which statistically significantly differs from the proportion of other ophthalmological and neophthalmological complications. An analysis of cases of appeals and provision of specialized ophthalmological care to patients with the most common age-associated diseases of the visual organ showed that DR with type 2 diabetes consistently holds the third rank in all years.
Conclusion. DR has shown a predominance among ophthalmic complications in the structure of ophthalmic complications of type 2 diabetes. In the analysis of cases of appeals and the provision of specialized ophthalmological care, DR took the third ranking place.
Keywords diabetic retinopathy, diabetes mellitus, complications of diabetes mellitus.
