Summary:
Relevance. Dental care is one of the most in-demand medical services across all population groups. It is particularly significant during childhood, as early oral health is a key determinant of an individual's long-term health status. Pediatric dentists play a central role in this system, with their responsibilities extending beyond treatment and prevention to fostering motivation for oral health preservation among children and their families. Analyzing the structure of illness-related visits to these specialists is crucial for assessing healthcare accessibility, identifying urban-rural disparities, justifying staffing requirements, and optimizing patient referral pathways based on the actual demand for dental care.
Purpose. To analyze the proportion of visits to pediatric dentists within the overall structure of illness-related dental visits by children in the Ivanovo region from 2019 to 2024.
Materials and Methods. This study utilized data from the official statistical form No. 30 ("Information on the Activities of Medical Organizations") for the Ivanovo region from 2019 to 2024. We analyzed the trends in visits for dental conditions to both pediatric dentists and other dental specialists (general dentists). The analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics.
Results. Over the study period, total dental visits by children for illness-related care (across all specialties) increased by 61.17%. A significant territorial disparity was revealed specifically for visits to pediatric dentists: the absolute number of visits by urban children increased by 102.1%, whereas visits by rural children decreased by 36.44%. A sharp 13.5% decline in total visits was observed in 2020, followed by a 38.09% recovery by 2021, which can be attributed to restrictive measures during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent pent-up demand for dental care.
Conclusions. From 2019 to 2024, approximately 70% of children's illness-related dental visits were to general dentists. The share of visits to pediatric dentists remained relatively stable at its initial level of ~30%, despite sharp fluctuations during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, an analysis of per-capita visit rates reveals a persistent negative trend for rural areas. This culminated in 2024 with minimal levels of actual coverage with specialized pediatric dental care for the rural child population, highlighting a critical disparity in the availability of dental services between urban and rural administrative territories.
