Summary:
Introduction. The coronavirus pandemic and its medical, social and psychological consequences have inevitably influenced the opinions and attitudes of young people on the issue of sexually transmitted infections, which differ depending on the profile of education. The purpose of the study is to study the awareness of students of different specialties in the Kursk region about the problem of STIs during the coronavirus pandemic and its consequences. Materials and methods. In 2022, a survey was conducted of 574 students of medical and biological specialties and 460 students of humanitarian and technical profiles. The data are compared with the results of a similar survey in 2017. Data processing was based on the descriptive statistics methods. Results. A complex of objective ideas about the problem of STIs was revealed in 80.5% of those receiving medical and biological education, and 56.3% - other. Compared to 2017, a significant increase occurred in both groups (p≤0.01). Among biomedical students, there was an increase in the proportion of those who are aware of the relevance and danger of sexual infections for all those who are sexually active and a significant reduction in the proportion of those who associate the risk of infection exclusively with frequent changes of partners (p≤0.01), and among students of the humanities and technical profile, there was a spread of ideas about far-fetchedness STD problems. The attitude to seek help from doctors in the event of a sexual infection is present in 95-97% of students, regardless of their specialty. Those receiving medical and biological education are much more likely to visit private clinics (81.5% versus 65.7% of humanities students, p≤0.01), compared to 2017, trust in private medicine has increased in both groups. Readiness for screening examinations in 2022 is significantly higher when receiving science education (86.6% versus 60.7%, p≤0.01), but it has decreased against the level of 2017. Discussion. The increase in the prevalence of correct ideas about STIs indicates the effectiveness of ongoing prevention and a stable situation in terms of cognitive factors for the spread of STIs in the region. Greater awareness of medical and biological students is natural, and the pronounced positive dynamics among them indicates that natural science knowledge makes a person more receptive to health education. Conclusions. There are significant gaps and misconceptions about the problem of STIs in about 25% of young people and a decrease in motivation for preventive examinations. The interest of young people in receiving medical care for STIs in private medical organizations, recommendations from pharmaceutical workers and information on Internet resources has significantly increased. A direct relationship has been established between an in-depth study of the natural sciences and susceptibility to objective information about the problem of STIs.
